Is your cat acting out?
Cats are very emotional creatures. They are affected by social and environmental factors which can trigger extreme behavioural changes. While you might find these disturbing, they are quite normal.
Cats are very territorial and intruders into their spaces will be dealt with severely. Your cat may stalk, make shrill noises, howl or even pounce on anyone (or anything) they see as an intruder. These are territorial defence behaviours. Extreme fear may cause hissing, spitting and swatting. Don't go near a cat that is exhibiting these signs. They will claw until they can get away and cat scratches can be dangerous if left untreated. They may even bite.
These emotions can be triggered by the sights, sounds and smells of unfamiliar cats outdoors. But sometimes the trigger is unknown. A cat may redirect these behaviours towards another household cat or even their humans.
The first treatment is to rule out any illness or medical condition that may be causing these behaviours. A trip to the vet may be all that is needed. If your cat is in good physical health, your vet will be able to offer you behavioural advice or refer you to a behavioural specialist
